There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing your
make-up but the most important factor in my opinion is being able to choose the
right colour and shade. If your base make-up such as your foundation isn’t the correct
shade for your skin, it can throw off your entire look. When considering shades
for yourself, knowing your undertone is crucial because as I said in my
previous article “your undertone is what determines what colours and shades
look best on you.”
Warm toned women are women with yellow, golden or peach
undertones. You look best in gold jewelry. Gold, Copper, Bronze, Earth Tones
and Orange-reds are your complimentary colours. In this case your foundation should
be Yellow or Peach based; therefore look for shades with a ‘W’ in the name (E.G.
Buff 6W). Warm shades lipstick, blush and/or bronzer to look for are peaches,
peachy pinks, oranges, corals and orange-y reds.
Cool toned women are women with pink, red or blue
undertones. You look best in silver jewelry. Silver, Grey, Magenta, Jewel
Tones, Blue-red are your complimentary colours. Your foundation should be Neutral
or Pink based; therefore look for shades with a ‘C’ in the name (E.G IVOIRE
2C). Cool shades lipstick, blush and/or bronzer to look for are rosy pinks,
blues, blue-greens, purples/violets and deep blue based reds.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE
for those of you who use MAC, their labeling is a little bit different. MAC
labels their make-up NC and NW as opposed to the usual W for warm (tones) or C
for cool (tones). With MAC products NC shades are for warm tones and NW shades
are for cool tones.
I think knowing what you’re looking for makes it ten times
easier to get the correct products and shades for yourself because sometimes
the beauty supply stores CSR’s are not properly trained or fully aware of the
correct way to match make-up. I hope this helps! Happy make-up shopping.
